Curb Chain FAQS

What is a curb chain?

The lineage of the curb chain stretches back to the world of horse riding and horse-drawn transportation, reflecting its enduring history. Initially employed as part of a horse's tack, specifically attached to the mouth bit, the curb chain plays a vital role in equine comfort and health. Positioned beneath the curved groove of the horse's neck and between the bit shank arms, its tightness or looseness significantly influences the rider's control and the animal's well-being. This chain, utilised to 'curb' the horse, has seamlessly transitioned from the equestrian realm to the world of human adornment.

As with many chains originating from industrial use, the curb chain has found a second life in jewellerry. Today, it stands as the most widely manufactured and sold chain style. The links of a curb chain can vary in design – flat, raised, beveled, open, or closed – yet maintain a consistent size. This adaptability makes curb chains a favorite in both gold and sterling silver, offering a versatile canvas for jewellery enthusiasts. Fine curb chains, often chosen for their delicacy, become ideal companions for pendants, while wider variants confidently step into the spotlight as standalone or statement necklaces. The curb chain's versatility doesn't stop there; it gracefully transforms into bracelets and anklets, cementing its place as a timeless and multifaceted jewellery staple.

Is a curb chain the same as a Cuban chain?

The 'Miami Cuban' chain utilises tightly packed and dense curb links and adds a curved or domed top, vs the flat top of a traditional curb chain. Opting for a Cuban chain is a good choice when you're aiming for a robust, metal-heavy aesthetic. The Cuban chain necklace offers a bold and distinct presence, perfect for those who appreciate a chunkier and more statement look in their jewellery.

Are curb chains the strongest?

Heavy and wide curb chains are pretty resilient necklaces, while finer more delicate curb chains will require a great deal more care. In order to keep your curb chain in good shape for many years we recommend always removing it before sleep, or during any activity where it could get pulled or snagged. Both pure gold and silver are soft metals and though they are alloyed with other metals in order to make 9ct gold, 18ct gold and sterling silver, good care still needs to be taken of them.

Can you sleep in a curb chain?

Definitely not. Always remove curb chain necklaces, anklets and bracelets off before sleep. When we move around in our sleep wearing a chain, its links rub together and weaken. Sleeping in gold or silver chains always causes microscopic amounts of damage which adds up over time. A thin curb chain will break quite quickly, a chunky curb or Cuban chain may take longer but eventually it will succumb to sleep damage.
