The Symbolism of St George

The image of St George slaying the dragon symbolises good triumphing over evil. St George is the patron saint of several countries including England, Venice, Genoa, Portugal, Ethiopia and Catalonia. Thought to have been a Roman soldier canonised in AD 494, he is believed to have protected the English army as far back as the 1100s. The George Cross, named after King George VI and awarded for acts of heroism or courage, also bears the image of St George vanquishing the dragon.
