Make no mistake about it - this vintage sapphire ring is absolutely stunning. Featuring a GLORIOUS, natural pear sapphire of a wonderful colour and clarity. In the trade we would refer to this sapphire as cornflower blue, and it's absolutely mesmerising. The claw set sapphire is surrounded by 14 small single cut diamonds that shine beautifully under the light. The ring is made from 18ct yellow gold and has beautifully scrolled shoulders. We'd age it somewhere around the 1950s, though it could well be older.
When the ring arrived with us the shank was very very worn. Too worn to last much longer than a couple of years at most. So we've had the shank removed from about 5mm under the shoulders on each side, melted down and recast along with some extra gold. This work has been carried out for us by an expert goldsmith in Hatton Garden and has ensured the ring has many years of life left yet, without losing any of its original gold.
In terms of the stone, the sapphire does show some indications of heating under the microscope - this is a treatment that has been carried out since antiquity and most sapphires on the market have been heated to improve their colour. The diamonds have not been treated in any way. A show stopping ring that will make her new owner very happy indeed! It's supplied in the lovely, vintage heart shaped ring case shown in the photos.
